It's a sunny afternoon in September, one week after the World Trade Center attack, and Manhattans's trying its hardest to move on. Inside Centaur Music's studios, Liza Minnelli and Alan Cumming are having fun, if only to keep us from crying. "The reason Alan and I are recording this record, this silly record, is to make people laugh," offers Minnelli, refering to their duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside," which is one track on the new release Broadway Cares: Home For The Holidays, a CD that will benefit both Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and victims of the September 11 disaster. "If we can give somebody some relief for two minutes, we've completely done our job." "Actually, I give hand relief too," quips Cumming. Minnelli laughs heartily, puffs on a cigarette, and, after Cumming has elaborated with a suggestive hand gesture, moans, "Here I am being all serious, and you're being all wonky." The recording session may be light-hearted, but Minnelli and Cumming have joined forces for a very serious cause. The newly recorded "Baby, It's Cold Outside" is but one of 16 holiday favorites on the disc. The listing of artists reads like a who's who of the Great White Way, with stars like Daphne Rubin-Vega and Christine Ebersole taking on traditional fare, while AIDA hunk Adam Pascal adds an appropriate pinch of New York City pride, ripping through Billy Joel's "New York State Of Mind." But for many, the highlight will be Minnelli and Cumming's camped-up summit. Says Minnelli: "It's swingy and sexy and wacky." Adds Cumming: "And there's going to be a fabulous dance remix - it'ss be at the Roxy by Christmas." With that, there are more uncontrollable fits of laughter - and nary a tear in sight.
